Leadville Lore
This from Ed Kerrigan:
In the early days of the Herald Democrat newspaper in Leadville, two men were the finalists of thirty applicants for the job of editor. One was a Harvard graduate, one was a local miner. In trying to decide which to hire, the men were told to write a short poem ending in the word "Timbuktu."
The Harvard graduate's poem:
Across the blazing sand
There rode the Sultan's caravan.
Horses marching two by two,
Destination Timbuktu!
The miner's poem:
Tim and me, a hunting we went.
Found three whores in a mountain tent.
Them being three and we being two,
I bucked one and Tim bucked two!
Which got the job?
More mine poetry found in Oro City mine shaft:
"My sweetheart's a mule in the mine,
I drive her all day without lines.
On the car front I sit
And tobacco I spit
All over my sweetheart's behind."
